Knee JOINT

Restoring Mobility. Relieving Pain.

Understanding Knee Conditions

Knee conditions include a wide range of problems that affect the bones, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles of the knee joint. These may result from accidents, twisting of knee, Sports Injury, wear and tear or Systemic inflammatory Arthritis. Symptoms often include pain, stiffness, swelling, or reduced mobility, which can interfere with everyday tasks and limit your quality of life.

From minor sprains to complex ligament tears or degenerative changes, timely care and the right treatment can make a major difference in recovery and long-term knee health.

When To Consult a Knee Specialist?

(01)

Persistent Knee Pain

  • Pain that doesn’t go away with rest or basic medication.

(02)

Swelling or Stiffness

  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee fully.

(03)

Locking of Knee

  • Sudden catching of your knee and difficulty to straighten or bend knee.

(04)

Instability or Buckling

  • A sensation that your knee may give way while walking or standing.

(05)

Reduced Range of Motion

  • Finding it hard to climb stairs, squat, or walk comfortably.

(06)

No Improvement with Conservative Treatment

  • When physiotherapy, painkillers, or injections no longer bring relief.

Osteoarthritis of the Knees

Osteoarthritis is a common chronic condition resulting from the gradual wearing of smooth cartilage in the knee joint. As the cartilage wears more and more, it causes bones to grind and rub against each other which leads to pain, stiffness, and swelling. Osteoarthritis is progressive in nature, and will over time lead to decreased ability to walk, climb stairs, or do other basic activities.

Ligament Injuries (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL)

Your knee is supported by four main ligaments, which provide stability and strength to the knee joint. ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) injuries, which are more common with sports and sudden twisting motions, are some of the most frequently encountered knee injuries. Ligament tears (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) lead to pain, swelling, and a loss of stability around the knee joint. Active individuals, especially sports enthusiasts, often require rehabilitation and arthroscopic surgery to treat these injuries.

Meniscus Tears

The meniscus is a soft cushion of your knee joint. It provides the function of a shock absorber between the femur and the tibia. Injuries in meniscus can occur due to sudden twisting of knee, sports injury or age related tear of meniscus. It is quite prevalent in sports and in the elderly population. This causes severe pain in day to day activity especially getting up from a seated position, locking of knee and swelling. Treatment of this condition can vary and in some cases, might need rest and physiotherapy to recover.

Patellar (Kneecap) Problems

Patella bone is held centrally by strong ligaments including the MPFL (Medial Patello Femoral Ligament). Due to injury or genetically abnormal bone morphology, patella can slide out which is called RECURRENT PATELLA DISLOCATION. This causes pain, fear/ apprehension in doing daily living, difficulty in squatting or stair climbing.

Cartilage Damage

Your knee also has menisci and articulating cartilage- a type of cartilage that covers the bone ends. Damage to this cartilage from injury or a chronic degenerative process is quite common, and the knee may become permanently painful and degenerative. Symptoms may include catching or locking of joints, swelling, and aches during movement. These may include various repair or preservation procedures for the cartilage or the joints.

Fractures around the knee

Injuries around the knee such as fractures of the femur, tibia, or patella are commonly caused by falling, car accidents or sporting activities. Knee fractures are quite common and in most cases are accompanied by severe pain, weight bearing incapacity, or severe swelling and deformity. These may include setting the bones using screws or plates and casting or surgical repair to stabilize the bones.

OSTEOARTHRITIS OF
THE KNEE

This is the condition when the smooth cartilage that cushions knee joints gradually wears away. This is common in older adults and results in stiffness, swelling, and pain that impedes walking, stair climbing, or even performing simple daily tasks.

LIGAMENT INJURY
(ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL TEAR)

Your knee is supported by four main ligaments, which provide stability and strength to the knee joint. Ligament tears (ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL) lead to pain, swelling, and a loss of stability around the knee joint.

MENISCUS TEARS

Meniscus is a soft cushion of your knee joint that acts as a Shock absorber. Meniscus tear can occur due to sudden twisting of knee, sports injury or age related tear of meniscus. This causes severe pain in day to day activity especially getting up from a seated position, locking of knee and swelling.

PATELLAR DISLOCATION

Patella bone is held centrally by strong ligaments including the MPFL (Medial Patello Femoral Ligament). Due to injury or genetically abnormal bone morphology, patella can slide out which is called RECURRENT PATELLA DISLOCATION. This causes pain, fear/ apprehension in doing activity of daily living.

CARTILAGE DAMAGE

Accidental injury, gradual continuous damage, or some form of arthritis may lead to a damaged cartilage in the knee. This is often accompanied by sharp pain and swelling, stiffness, and in some cases, even difficulty in moving the joint smoothly.

FRACTURES AROUND THE KNEE

Fractures around the knee involve breaks in the bones forming the joint, often due to trauma, accidents, or falls. They cause severe pain, swelling, inability to bear weight, and require urgent medical attention.
